2-3-06 Structure fire, 375 rear 3rd Street

Approximately 2:00 P.M. 229,230,7,306, Truck 4, and R1 for RIT were dispatched to a structure fire with entrapment to the 200 block of Wall Ave. Arrival on scene found a fully involved 2 story duplex with very heavy fire from side 1,2, and 3 of the structure at 375 rear 3rd St. A 2nd alarm was called for immediately by 229, and as units were arriving undermanned, additional units were called to the scene to help with manpower. Due to the very heavy volume of fire, and partial structural collapse, crews were pulled out by command and an exterior defensive attack with aerials from T4, T229, and several hand lines were used to gain some control over the fire. Continual protection of exposures throughout the incident prevented these close buildings from becoming more involved. After a major knockdown from the exterior attack, interior operations resumed with caution due to the extent of damage of one side of the duplex. It was a long battle, and unfortunately there was a disabled woman inside who never made it out. After further investigation from the County Fire Marshall and Coroner, the fire was believed to be accidental, and the woman appeared to have died from a coronary incident prior to the fire.
2-1-06 Structure fire, 200 block Center Ave.

Appromimately 12:30 A.M. 229,230, and 7 were dispatched for a garbage fire, possible structure fire on 2nd Street at the rear of the Dari-Deli Mart. Police arrived on scene and reported a dumpster on fire in the rear of the building and that the fire was extending into the building with live electrical wires down. Command added 306, Truck 4 and R1 to the call with involvement of the structure. Crews from 229 and 230 started a fire attack while checking for extension all of the attached buildings. There are approximately 12 apartments above the Dari, and Dan's Floral is also adjoined. The fire was troublesome due to the amount of remodeling throughout the building. There were several voids and layers of flooring, allowing the fire to travel. If this fire would have had a little more of a head start on us, things would have been much worse. Good job by all companies to keep this from spreading throughout the entire building. This fire was suspicious in origin and is being investigated by the Allegheny County Fire Marshall's Office.
